Best Friends Animal Society is a nonprofit organization building no-kill prorams and partnerships that will bring about a day when there are No More Homeless Pets. The society’s leading initiatives in animal care and community programs are coordinated from its Kanab, Utah headquarters, the country’s largest no-kill sanctuary. This work is made possible by the personal and financial support of a grassroots network of members and community partners across the nation.
The cats here come from some terrible situations. Some are abused and some were neglected, while others were simply abandoned.
But once they arrive here at Best Friends their lives become happy again.
A Day in the Life of Cat World
Come and get it! Every morning, some 525 cats wait for their servants-a.k.a. Best Friends caregivers-to fill their food pans. But not all cats want to break bread with their feline friends. Around 200 shy cats, or those who simply prefer to dine alone, will have special bowls prepared just for them. Another 140 cats need special diets or have their medication included in their breakfasts.
Thank goodness for volunteers…they take the first wave of cats out for their morning strolls. There are about 50 cats who happen to enjoy harnessing up for a daily outing. While they’re gone, caregivers and volunteers begin the daily task of cleaning each cat room. And with 10 buildings, that’s alot of rooms [not to mention litter boxes].
Cleaning continues – this time with the cats themselves. That’s right! We give almost 40 bathrs a day to special-needs kitties who need a little extra help staying groomed.
It’s the toughest part of the day in Cat World, but someone has to keep all those kittens properly socialized. That means playing, cuddling, and other fun …ahem, learning experiences. Caregivers dedicate themselves to doing whatever it takes to help these kittens fit into any family. At some point during the morning, the laundry starts… and never seems to end! You thought you had a lot of loads? All day, every day shifts of blankets and bed covers go to the laundry room.
Nap time! At least, for the cats. They’ve worked hard all morning and need their beauty sleep.
Get those smiles nice and bright! Cat dentals are performed five days a wek at Happy Landings [our medical building specifically for cats.]
Those cats not scheduled for dentals enjoy some quality one-on-one time with caregivers to help with their socialization- after all, learning lasts a lifetime. This is also when senior cats have a little downtime with caregivers and volunteers.
Visiting tour groups have been soaking up the sights and smells of the Sanctuary all day. At the same time, the last group of cats come back form their walks. Some need to pack their bags! Each night some are scooped up by volunteers and taken home for sleepovers.
It’s time for the cats to have some peace and quiet, so they dismiss their staff for the night. Now that the hustle and bustle of the day is done, the shyer cats can start exploring. For some, the magic of the day has only just begun…
