Animal Spotlight: Sand Tiger Sharks AnimalSpotlight

Have you seen the new additions to Shark Lagoon? Four sand tiger sharks were recently added to the exhibit. They are approximately 5-6 months old at this point.

This species of shark can be found in most of the world’s tropical or temperate oceans, except for the Eastern Pacific, and are known by many different names. Off the coast of Australia they are known as grey reef sharks and in South Africa are often referred to as ragged-tooth sharks.

Here in the Atlantic, sand tiger sharks can be found from the Gulf of Maine all the way down to Florida, into the Gulf of Mexico and even as far south as Brazil and Argentina.

Did you know:

  • A modern glass bottle would take 1 million years or more to decompose.
  • Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours.
  • Plastic bags and other plastic garbage thrown into the ocean kills as many as 1 million sea creatures every year.
