|James Wayne and his 4-year-old service dog Happy need our help to get them into permanent housing. Jim has been homeless for 11 years, (most recently in Manhattan). To escape the frigid temperatures, they live in the subways.
I got involved because my dear friend Carol expressed her major concerns to me that he has done everything that has been asked of him by the Dept of Homeless Services and he still keeps getting the run around mainly because he has a dog, Happy is a certified service dog.
She has helped him with steering him in the right direction and giving him guidance on getting medical insurance, applying for housing and also paid to have Happy neutered and vetted.
I’m working with his social worker who also shared her concerns and doesn’t understand why Jim and Happy keep getting turned away month after month even though she explains that Happy is federally protected. I’ve been communicating with DHS on his behalf (getting a form signed by him tonight to allow them to share all info on his case with me).
He will not go into a shelter for fear of someone harming Happy which I don’t blame him. Last week, he injured his hand fending off another homeless man who was trying to burn Happy.
All he wants is the same opportunities as everyone else. He has been passed up and getting pushed aside for months.
I will not stop until he is offered private permanent housing but I really need someone’s help. It’s very sad and heartbreaking, this should not be happening. All he wants is a chance to make things better in his life.

Thank you for helping.
