I got the call at 1:30 am. Shell announced they are leaving the Arctic Ocean and discontinuing their drilling program.
Make no mistake. People power made this happen. So, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for being one of our supporters during this battle.
I feel so lucky to have had you by our side. Seven years. A $7 billion investment. And, from the northernmost villages in Alaska all the way to Florida, millions of citizens rising up in protest.
Now, Shell’s come up dry.
What we do is keep Alaska wild. As a result, we’ve helped polar bears, walrus, seals and whales. And we’ve helped citizens of our planet – it makes no sense to despoil a unique landscape like the Arctic Ocean and dig ourselves deeper into the climate crisis.
With Shell out of the picture, now we can charge forward with permanent protections for this amazing place. Your donation will keep the victories coming!
It’s been a long road to get here but today’s announcement by Shell is a welcome exclamation point on what has been a risky and unnecessary push for Arctic oil. This victory is a fitting end to a drilling effort that will forever be known for Shell’s repeated missteps and blunders.
With this announcement, President Obama should seize on this historic opportunity to look forward and protect the Arctic for our children and our climate future.
As sea ice continues to decline and Arctic waters are quickly becoming more acidic, one powerful way we can slow the effects of climate change is to limit the amount of fossil fuels we are burning, and an effective way to do that is by not opening up new areas – like the Arctic – to intensive drilling. Today is a historic step toward achieving that goal.
